Im not 100% but I recall I think on RC about people not liking magfloats because any sand or anything between the pad will scratch the F outa the tank

I managed to pick up sand and scratch my acrylic display tank with an acrylic safe mag float. I replaced it with an Algae Free brand 1-2 years ago which uses replaceable acrylic safe pads.

I cut replacemnt pads to fit my Mag float and I've been using it on one of my ohther tanks with absolutely no problems ever since.

I think the answer is probably a yes. Just be careful because you can still pick up sand in an acrylic safe pad.

Am I better hand cleaning it with a hand held algae scrubber?

Magic eraser original works wonders, even takes out small scratches eventually.

Yes, you have to make sure you use the original plain jane one. I have used them for years with no ill effects at all.
