I am designing an LED light for my 40 gallon cube and I am trying to keep it under $200.
Design plans and assumptions: - LEDs will be placed on the tank glass, which is at the water surface - Corals are softies, but I may add some LPS (I like things that move.) - Tank dimensions are 24x24x19 (length x width x depth)
    I open to opinions.
    Thank you, Bob.

I didn't look through it too close, but if I were you I wouldn't put any red leds on it, get done warm whites instead. Also, rapidled's pre drilled heatsinks are pretty awesome, is get once of them and a tube of thermal grease. It'll make your life much easier!

Check aquastyleonline.com - cheaper than rapidled and the LEDs are the same quality and power. I can get 108 LEDs half white half blue, 3 dimmable drivers, all wiring and grease for $300. Just need to add heat sinks and I was thinking about just grabbing some 1" U channel from my local hardware store for those.

Forgot to mention that credit for the site and the U channel idea belongs to Doug (Big D) lol

Are you using the 1" U channel with or without a fan? My firewall will not accept www.aquastyleonline.com. I thought the red leds were good to accent the coral color.

I am not planning to mount fans directly to the U channel. Was going to have a few in my canopy to help with air flow over the water to cause evaporation and to also help keep the LEDs cool

The red won't help with coral color like you think it would... But it does help nuisance algae grow! I agree with Adam a few warm whites instead have all the red you need. For cube tanks I also like multichip LEDs around 20 watts with a 90 degree lens... Here is another thread with lots of info on multichip.

so you are using the moonlight driver to run the reds and the violets, and only using one dimmable driver for your whites and RB?
are you sure that your ratio of RB and white will give the color your looking for?

The link to the 20 watt multichips did not work. I want to drive the whites and blues at 1.3A and the UV can only handle 350mA, so I was planning to drive the UVs with the moonlight driver. From my reading most people seem to like either 60% blue to 40% white or 1:1. I have not read many using the UVs, but since the wavelength is above 400 and below the royal blue it seems like they would be good for photosynthesis.

How do people feel about the Bridgelux LEDs vs the Cree? I am partial to the Cree and have heard good things about them, but the Bridgelux are much cheaper. This deal from http://www.aquastyleonline.com/products/Aquarium-24--LEDs--DIY-Dimmable-Kit.html is really good at $99.
