I have the wood working skills needed but am a little unsure were to start designing and sealing a sump tank. im looking at a 40"Lx 18"W  x 14"ish height.  Any ideas out there? has anyone built a plywood tank recently?

For that small of a tank the cost will probably not be worth the effort. Go to petco and pick up a tank for $1/gallon and call it a day. You'd probably have a good amount of money in materials alone. Not to mention the time and effort it would take to build the thing.

+1 going to cost too much for that size tank plywood tanks don't become cost effective until the 300 gal range. I would buy a 40 breeder pretty close to the dimensions your looking for. how ever if you are still interested in building a plywood tank pm me your number and ill call you and discuss it with you cause I have way to much info to type and I don't want you to make the same mistakes as I did in my build
