Best skimmer for 100g system??

I'm still having troubles with my skimmer and am considering getting a new skimmer around christmas time. What would you recommend for a skimmer for a 60-100g system? Looking for an in-sump skimmer that will pull a lot of crud and will fit in a 12"x10" area easily. Thanks!

It all depends on your price range

One that works decent, but wont cost a million is the Reef Octoplus NWB 110. They are about $170.

The more you can spend, the better you can get.

You beat me, great minds think alike!

 

It makes bubbles well but now it won't stay at a consistent height. I leave it a a certain setting and the water level inside the column will slowly drop. But if I adjust it the tiniest bit, I mean moving it maybe a millimeter, it freaks out and overflows on my carpet.

I don't know what else to do. Its just so frustrating!!!! I just want something that I can turn on, set, and not have to worry about. Not something that I have to keep checking to see whether its actually making bubbles or running all over my floor.

 

lol thanks guys. If you were in my shoes, is there anything else you would try or would you scrap it and just get a new skimmer?

 

This is not an in-sump skimmer correct?

 

The one I have is optional. I was going to put it in my sump this weekend but even with my renovations it won't fit. The one in the link is for in-sump only.

 

Are the recirculating skimmers a large improvement over the one you showed me? Would this skimmer be worth the additional cost?

That type of problem is usually caused by eithera partially blocked air intake, or too much back pressure on the outlet. The water coming out should be able to drain freely.

 

Yes, it is fed by a maxijet 1200. I'll check the air intake. I can't imagine all of a sudden it would have too much pressure on the outlet seeing as it's been able to maintain a stable level before yesterday. I'll check for blockages though.

Yeah I was heading in this direction, I know my Reef Octopus is sensitive to back pressure on the outlet, if you stick it too far under the water it causes issues, and it does not take much depth to cause mine to freak out.

 

I actually drilled a series of holes a little higher than the water line so even if for some reason the water in my sump rises"when I turn off pump to feed or if electicity goes off" it still won't overflow because water still runs outa the holes I drilled.And eleminates the back preasure. hope this helps

 

My outlet is always above the surface of the water. Any suggestions after learning that?

 

SCW cone 160. You won't be disappointed. It is a in-sump skimmer though.

Try a smaller feed pump. I am running the DNWB 110 and lately decided to turn the valve down a bit that was feeding the skimmer and noticed better results. More contact time in the chamber!

 

Thats an interesting idea Gered. I'll give that a try.
