Tank Build! Apex upgrades-tank run costs

Just upgraded to using EB 832's. I love the power consumption feature that shows daily and Monthly electricity costs. Thought this was interesting and wanted to share.

 

Wow.. I'm guessing I need to update my firmware. Pretty cool.

 

How large is your tank and how many bells and whistles are running?

 

I have a 189 gallon 60x36x20.
3 Mp-40 pumps
1 Tunze Turbelle stream 3
1 main pump Reef flo
6 ecotech Radion lights
5 48 inch T5's
1 Reef octopus 250 3xt skimmer
1 Reef octopus pump for skimmer feed
2 500 watt heaters
those are the big consumers of juice

going to phase out the main pump with a vectra in the future, somthing more efficient. And after seeing the consumption in this detail you can make the system a bit more efficient.

 

My jaw dropped at $66/mo to power your tank, figured it had to be something sizeable.

I've been kinda lucky the past few years only running a BC29 I guess.

Average amp pull of 6.06 times 120 volts = 727.2 watts. A 30 day month would be 523.6 kWh. At $.07 per kWh that comes out to $36.65 per month. Unfortunately I do have some additional devices that aren't plugged into my EB8s (namely my lights).

 

And that's for your behind-bar tank? 120?

 

Correct, that it's behind the bar. Display is a 400g and the sump is a 120g. It helps that the heater almost never has to kick on (didn't turn on at all in the last week).

 

See this is what's nuts to me. You're more than double the volume and half the monthly expense!

Maybe GIRS could put together a best-practice list on how to get the most energy efficient aquariums. I think that could be a handy guide for everyone's wallet.

What is your lighting setup? I know mine pull quite a bit mid day. I really want to change my main pump, its a reeflo yellowtail, its makes the meter spin too.

I will send a shot later when the lights are at peak.

I have been wanting to streamline the consumption for some time.

I have my calculation at .10 kwh

My lighting is DIY LEDs which pull around 324w mid day (probably spend about 8 hours at 100%). I'm also not accounting for 2 Jebao PP-20s and 2 Vortech MP40s. My biggest power drain is from my feed pump on my skimmer. I use a Reeflo Hammerhead Gold which pulls around 300 watts nonstop. I'm actually not too disappointed with my Jebao DCT 15000 for a return pump. Pretty good flow for 150w.

Wow, you've really got that tank lit up! I know I could probably increase my wattage a bit. When I had these same lights over a 180g I could only run them at 70% max or I'd start to burn stuff. When I switched to the 400g I put some tighter optics on them to get better light penetration at lower levels and cranked them up to 100%. PAR is okay but not at the levels a lot of people seem to boast about.
