APEX Help

I have my APEX configured for my home network but I cannot seem to access it via www.
I think my network and port forwarding is set up correctly. What is the web address? Is it "http://controller_name.externalIPort" ? or something else?

Yeah that doesnt seem to work when I'm trying to remote access the controller from someplace other than my LAN.

So do I need to use my external IP and port to access the controller?

 

Use the external or the IP address of your router and then the port number. Make sure you router is setup to pass that port number as well. YOu may have to disable a multicast feature depending on what type of router you have. I can tell you exactly what it is if you have a linksys/Cisco.

 

Set up a Dyndns.org account and use that.

You can get one free hostname from dyndns.org by doing the DynDNS Pro Free Trial:   "http://dyn.com/dns/dyndns-pro-free-trial/"



If you remove your billing information before the trial period is over, then you will not be billed AND you will keep your hostname.

To your question though....I use mediacom and they basically NEVER change the ip they give you, even though it is technically dynamic. Do you use mediacom by chance?

 

Could be your port isn't open, sometimes routers a a little finicky when it comes to forwarding ports.

To see if your port is truly open use: http://www.canyouseeme.org/ and enter the port you are forwarding for the device.

That would be a good place to start.

 

I don't want to really do dyDNS because my router already supports port forwarding, and it just seems like another account, another un/pass to remember etc.

When I ping the APEX's assigned IP it times out. Might it help to try a different port? I know that 80 is commonly blocked by firewalls, I'm using 8000 now, maybe it doesn't like 8's lol

 

Dyndns and port forwarding are totally different. Dyndns maps your public IP to a public DNS name. Port forwarding allows you to map your ports from your public IP to an internal host. Port mapping (forwarding) is required; but getting a public DNS hostname is a good thing too. Also, most newer routers have areas in the config where you can put in your account information for dyndns. Then you don't have to remember it.

BTW, what router are you using? If it's Tomato compatible (http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato), I highly recommend flashing your router with that firmware. User friendly, full functioned, stable and IMO, better than DD-WRT.

no it wasn't working from remote internet acces, it was only active on my LAN, and it still is. But I'd like to check up on it while I'm at work and on my mobile.

Yes, public IP = external IP.

+1 on dydns. Once I set it up with external ip, and fwrded port and input account info under dns section of the router setup all was good.

 

Well I just finally got it figured out and working, I had to change my gateway IP. However, upon doing this and updating my network settings in the APEX, it erased all my outlet settings, and keeps crashing. I'm working on just wiping the modules and re-adding them, but it crashes and has to be hard reset every time I do this /DesktopModules/ActiveForums/themes/_default//emoticons/sad.gif wish me luck

 

May want to check your apex firmware make sure your running something more recent if it is really old, also you can backup all your settings when you are done.Then all you have to do is reload that file and names, programming, outlets, everything will come back its pretty easy.
