I'll tell ya what I'm going to do from now on. I used a metal chop saw and cut the top and bottom flat on my live rock so that it will sit nice and flat on the bottom of the tank, then you can stack more on top of that. then just cut the bottom only on the top pieces of live rock. This way it will stack better and you can make some nice overhangs and caves.
Its nice to if you go BB you can make little islands to fill up the bare spots on the bottom that wont roll around, then put some nice sps or lps corals on them giving you more of the top of the reef look.
If I had to do it all over again. I would get all COOKED Dry rock its cheaper then live rock, then you can cut the bottom and tops and use some two part epoxy to glue your rock work together making all kinds of cool shapes. Then just use some good quality live rock to seed it.
Hope this gives you and others some ideas! Good luck!!

I think the secret is in getting big pieces of rock. Not always so easy though.

Cover it with coral and you won't care how your rock looks.

as I said I am new
What kind of glue would you be using for that?
would the pieces have to be dry to do that?

Check out this PVC based approach:

Haven't tried it myself but it's on my list of projects to tackle when I get some time.
