will a mag 12 be a good return pump for a 90 gallon reef? or is that pump to small? thanks

What is the distance from the sump to the return point on the 90? If you are less than 6 foot yes but over that it starts to get iffy.

A Mag 9.5 is plenty on a 90 gallon reef, even at 6 foot of head. Check this out: http://www.marinedepot.com/powerheads_pumps_danner_mag_drive_supreme-ap.html

At 6 foot of head, a Mag 9.5 delivers 720 GPH (an Aqueon reef ready 90 gallon tank's overflow is rated at 600 GPH I think). At 6 foot, a Mag 12 delivers 950 GPH. You could easily T off your return line and use the same pump to run a reactor or two and still be OK using a Mag 12 on a 90 gallon tank.

Ha! Amature! I use a MAG 18 AND a MAg12 on mine. I should say that I have my sump in the basemrnt and my Tank above it on the first floor. Oh and it is a 135G. LOL.

I use a 9.5 on my 90 with the sump directly below the DT and it is throttled down a little.

Those pump curves for the Mag 12 and 18 are all based on using 1.5" ID return. I was running a 12 with 4.5' head and 3/4" hose and was getting 400 GPH. upped it to 1.25" (still had to go through 3/4" bulkhead) and maxed out at about 780 GPH.
